Testimonies from Bhutan Christianity is alive and well in Bhutan. Currently there is freedom to worship, revival is going on, and many new people are receiving Jesus. In one church in the capital of Thimphu alone, the number of believers has increased to 500-600 compared to 200 previously! The believers are increasing daily because they see mighty miracles of God taking place in the church. Many Drukpas (native Bhutanese Buddhists) come to church just for entertainment or as spies. But when they hear the Word of God, they get saved and start attending church.

Demoniac Set Free Recently an exciting miracle took place in Thimphu church. One man named Pemba, 29 years old, was married with two sons and three daughters. He had studied at Oxford University in London, and was a well-educated intellectual man. But when he came to Bhutan, he became mad. He came to the church regularly, and disturbed the Sunday services. He shouted and screamed and threw the shoes around outside. He ripped out all the flowers planted outside the church and scattered them around. Some of the believers that came from far away kept their food bags outside the church. While the meeting was going on, Pemba ate it all. One man in the church had the responsibility to watch the shoes outside, so they would not get stolen. One day, the mad man Pemba was outside the church, playing with the shoes during the service. The brother who watched the shoes took his hand and brought him inside the church. When the preaching was over, the pastor and all the believers prayed for him. Immediately Pemba fell down on the floor. For fifteen minutes he was slain. Then he woke up and stretched his body. The Pastor asked him, “How are you feeling?” Pemba answered, "I’m fine!" From that day he was totally delivered. Because of what Jesus did for him, Pemba accepted Jesus as his Savior. When they saw the miracle that took place in his life, his wife, children, and many friends and relatives also received Jesus, and are now attending church.

Blind Man Healed Twenty-one year old Sonam Dorjee was blind, and the only son in his family. He and his family were very strong orthodox Buddhists. Sonam’s parents spent lots of money to try to cure him, but nothing helped. They took him to the hospital, to witch doctors, and he tried all kind of black magic, without success. One day some young people from a church were passing by Sonam’s home, and saw him lying outside their house. They introduced themselves, gave Sonam some tracts, and shared the Gospel with him.

The next week, the Christians came back to see Sonam again. They helped his family practically by cleaning and washing their house, and shared the Gospel with his parents also. That day Sonam received Jesus Christ. The following Sunday the youth brought him to church for the service. The Pastor and all the believers laid hands on him and prayed for him. Right after praying, the pastor asked a brother to get a glass of water. Then he prayed again, put his finger in the water, and asked the blind man to wash his face and eyes with the water. Sonam did, and immediately his eyes were opened! All the people in the church, including some new believers and some unsaved people were amazed. Because of this miracle, Sonam’s parents also received Jesus.

Epileptic Seizure Healed Deepak Drukpa was an Orthodox Buddhist living in Thimphu, Bhutan. He was oppressed by demonic spirits, which caused him to have epileptic seizures. Whenever he was attacked, he would have seizures, and then go crazy. Because of these frequent spells, he couldn’t live a normal life, or keep a job. He did get married and had three sons, but the demonic attacks kept his family in much distress. Being a religious man, Deepak did lots of pujas (idol worshiping) to try to get free from the bondage, but found no relief. His parents finally took him to the witch doctor. They provided animal sacrifices to the witchdoctor of goat, hen, pigeon, cow, animal blood, and eggs for him to use in his magic spells. They also spent the equivalent of $4,500 US for the witchdoctor’s services. But nothing helped Deepak; instead he got worse.

Finally, when nothing worked, Deepak got so desperate that he tried to commit suicide. Fortunately he didn’t succeed. Then God spoke to a local Bhutanese believer named Phuntsho, who didn’t even know where Deepak lived, and told him to go and pray for him. God led Phuntsho to Deepak’s’ house, where he shared the Gospel with Deepak, anointed him with oil, and prayed for him. Suddenly Deepak started to scream loudly, and fell down unconscious on the floor. After half an hour he woke up, and was completely free. He was so happy to be free from torment at last, that he jumped up and down, lifted his hands, and loudly gave thanks and praise to God. Because of Deepak’s deliverance, all his family and friends and neighbors accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Now Deepak has become a strong believer, and is a living testimony in the Bhutanese church. He works as a teacher in a primary school.

Delivered from the spirit of Suicide Two weeks later, his five sisters died in a landslide. Danbhadur was very depressed over this tragedy, and decided to commit suicide. He tried to take his life by swallowing a lock to chock himself, but that didn’t succeed. Then he tried to jump into a big river, but the flood threw him up on the shore still alive. He kept trying to commit suicide in different ways, but he always failed.

One day while he was sitting depressed in his home, a Christian Bhutanese missionary came. Danbhadur invited him in, and the missionary shared the good news of Jesus Christ with him. After listening, Danbhadur accepted Jesus into his life. Instantly the desire to kill himself was gone, and he had peace in his heart. The missionary gave him some tracts and a New Testament.

Danbhadur’s lifestyle changed, and he developed a close relationship with God. When his parents, friends and relatives saw the changes that took place in his life, they all accepted Jesus Christ. Today Danbhadur is a part of a small fellowship in Gedu, where 60 people gather to worship the Lord. They don't have a pastor yet, or anyone to help them, so pray that God will send someone to these new believers. Hardcore Criminal to Worship Leader Tshering Penjor was a terrible criminal. He was a drug addict, and a notorious gang leader. He always carried a revolver, and went around and forced people to give him money. If they had nothing to give him, he took their animals and their property. He regularly broke into homes and robbed people, and committed murder several times. One day when he was on a drug trip he tried to kill his own parents, but fortunately failed. One day, on his way to the temple, Tshering met a Christian named Tashi, from a local church. Tashi shared the gospel with Tshering, and gave him a tract about how Jesus could deliver him from drugs. Tshering listened, and read the tract with great interest. Tashi started visiting Tshering every day in his home, befriending him, and telling him more about Jesus. After some time, Tshering came with Tashi to church. There he gave his life to Jesus, and was transformed by the power of God into a totally different person. Tshering was baptized in water. Tshering’s family was also saved and added to the church after seeing the amazing change in his life.

Today Tshering is a music leader in a local church in the capital. He also goes out on the street regularly, plays his guitar and sings gospel songs, and shares his testimony with his addict friends.

Billy Graham in Thimphu Dhanbir was an alcoholic who lived with his wife and five children in Thimpu, Bhutan. Every time he got drunk, he would become violent and physically abuse his whole family. They all lived under a cloud of depression and darkness, and because of all the money spent on alcohol, there was never enough to buy food.

One day Dhanbir got the magazine “Decision” (Billy Graham Ministries) from his eldest son, and started to read it. The words in the magazine immediately started to convict him and before he even finished reading it, he began drinking less. After finishing the magazine, Dhanbir decided to believe in Jesus. He became a born again believer and was delivered from alcoholism. Because of this miracle, Dhanbir’s wife and children also gave their lives to Jesus. The whole family now attends church together, and is a living testimony of the grace of God.

From the Fear of Death to Eternal Life >Mindup Dorjee had been an unhappy person all of his life. He was always worried about life after death, and was afraid of what would happen if he died. He never had peace, and had made himself physically ill because of his worries.

One day, a believer named Hosea Tamang gave Mindup a tape of John Osteen preaching. While listening to this tape his heart was touched. That night he knelt down in his bedroom and prayed a simple prayer: "Lord, forgive me. I am a sinner. I've made you cry. Please accept me in your family. Come into my heart." For three or four hours he cried and repented before God. And God spoke these words to his heart: "I've made you my child. Sin no more, but fix your eyes upon me." The room was filled with a bright light, and Mindup felt burning inside of his body. All of his bed sheets and pillow were wet from tears and sweat when he finally fell asleep, unafraid of death for the first time in his life.

The next morning Mindup burned all of his heavy depressing music tapes with kerosene oil, along with all the pornographic pictures that had covered his walls. He then wrote Bible verses on chart paper and put those up on his walls instead. Mindup’s family watched these changes in his life with amazement. Then Mindup shared with his family about his encounter with Jesus Christ, and because of the miracle they saw in his life, all of them were saved as well.

Mindup is now taking training as a teacher in a small city in Bhutan. While he is studying, he is also witnessing to others of how God changed his life.
